Create a jointly taught activity

You can create jointly taught activities (JTAs) in Enterprise Timetabler. For more information about JTAs, see Jointly taught activities.

About this task: The activities that a JTA replaces in the timetable must have the same teaching week pattern, and cannot be variant activities.

To create a jointly taught activity, follow these steps:

  1. Decide which method you will use to select the parent activities:
    • You can select a primary parent activity, then add other activities to the JTA. You add other activities in the Jointly Taught Activities window, which lists only the activities that you can add to the JTA.
    • You can select all the activities to add to the JTA. You select the activities in the Activities pane, so you must be sure that all your selected activities can be combined by a JTA. If the selection contains activities that cannot be combined, then some activities are not added to the JTA. The JTA will replace a group of activities that are present within your multiple selection and can be combined.
  2. Depending on your chosen method, follow the appropriate instruction below:
    • In the table in the Activities pane, select the primary parent activity for the JTA.
    • In the table in the Activities pane, select multiple activities to add to the JTA.
  3. In the Actions menu, click Jointly Taught Activity. The Jointly Taught Activities window opens.
  4. If you selected one activity in the Activities pane, add other activities to the JTA. Optionally, if you selected multiple activities, you can add more to the JTA.
    1. In the Candidates for sharing area, click a module in the Module list. The table in the Candidates for sharing area contains activities from that module that you can add to the JTA. If the module contains no suitable activities, the table is empty. Your access to activities is controlled by the permissions that are assigned to you.
    2. Select activities in the table. You can select multiple activities.
    3. Click the arrow above the Candidates for sharing area.
  5. Select a primary parent activity from the Primary Activity list above the upper table. If you selected a single activity in the Activities pane, it is already set as the primary activity.

    Note: The duration of the JTA is equal to the duration of the primary activity.

  6. On the Options tab, select whether property values of the new JTA are copied solely from the primary parent, or combined from all parent activities. For more information about the options, see Jointly Taught Activities options.
  7. Optional: Modify the name and description.
  8. Click OK. The Jointly Taught Activities window closes, and the following actions occur:
    • Enterprise Timetabler creates the JTA.
    • Enterprise Timetabler creates relationships between the JTA and its parent activities. The relationships indirectly associate the JTA with the modules that its parents are part of. When Enterprise Timetabler lists the activities that any of those modules consist of, the list will contain the JTA.
    • The parent activities are hidden; the resources that were allocated to them can now be allocated to other activities. To access or edit a parent activity's properties, select the activity in the upper table of the Jointly Taught Activities window, then click Edit Selected Parents.
    • The student sets that are allocated to the parent activities are allocated to the JTA.
    • If the primary activity was scheduled, the JTA is scheduled at the same position in the timetable. Resources are allocated to it. If any constraints are broken, a scheduling problem is generated.
