Departments

In EDRDM, you can model the departmental structure of your institution.

The departments that you create in EDRDM can be associated with resources, to control their allocation. For example, you can ensure that computing labs that are "owned" by the Computing department are allocated only to activities that are directly associated with that department.

Also, departments can be used to control the access that other users have to items. Depending on how permissions are set up in Authorisation Manager at your institution, the ability for users to see, edit, or use items (such as modules and locations) in other Enterprise Foundation applications might depend on the department that the item is attached to. For example, a timetabler in the Science department might be permitted to view and schedule only the activities that the Science department runs. So, it is important that you accurately model departments, and correctly associate items with them.

Hierarchy

The departmental structure in your institution might be hierarchical. For example, the Spanish department might be part of the Language School. In EDRDM, each department has its own Department property; in this property, select the parent department, if applicable.
