Plan pathways

To specify the sets of modules (within a programme of study) whose activities must be kept clash-free, you can create pathways. For information about pathways, see Pathway.

To create pathways for a programme of study, follow these steps:

  1. Open a programme list.
    • To open a list of all programmes of study, click Programmes in the View menu.
    • To open a list of programmes that is filtered by department, click the Department box in the toolbar above the Enterprise Course Planner dashboard, select a department, then in the Programmes section of the dashboard, click Show (beside the Total value).
    • You can search, filter, group, and sort the list that Enterprise Course Planner opens.
  2. In the Programme Editor window, click the programme that you want to create pathways for.
  3. In the toolbar of the Programme Editor window, click Pathway Generator. The Pathway Generator window opens.

    The Pathway Generator window

  4. Use one of the following methods to generate pathways.

The pathway generator compares the credits required by the programme (1, above) with the sum of the credits delivered by the programme's mandatory modules. Then, it determines how many additional credits a student must accumulate from the optional modules on the programme.

Mandatory modules are automatically included in the Pathway Modules list (2), which specifies the modules that will be included in the new pathways. Mandatory modules are identified by a lock symbol (3). Optional modules are also identified by a symbol (7).

A further calculation determines how many different permutations of mandatory and optional modules give the student the required number of credits. The Existing Pathways value (4) indicates how many of these permutations already exist as pathways. The number of pathways left to generate is indicated by the Pathways To Generate value (5).

To generate pathways, click Auto Generate.

Manually specify which modules are included in the generated pathways

To specify that particular optional modules must be part of the generated pathways, you can move modules from the Available Modules list (6) to the Pathway Modules list. Optional modules are indicated by a symbol (7).

To move a module, click it in the Available Modules list, then click the double-arrow button (8) that points towards the Pathway Modules list. The Pathways To Generate value changes.

To generate pathways, click Auto Generate.

However, when the number of credits delivered by modules in the Pathway Modules list equals the credit requirement of the programme, the number of permutations is 1. To generate a single pathway that consists of the modules in the Pathway Modules list, click Auto Generate.

Manually specify the modules to include in a new pathway, without validation

You can create pathways that do not conform to the credit requirement of the programme. For example, students might be allowed to take additional credits in one year and fewer in the following year. You can also create pathways that do not include mandatory modules.

To turn off pathway validation, clear the Allow valid combinations only check box (9).

Then, move the modules that you want to include in the pathway over to the Pathway Modules list. To create the pathway, click Create.

    Automatic from student choice

If the institution is using Scientia’s Student Allocator to collect students’ module choices, or has some other means to ensure that the combination of modules chosen by each student is valid for their programme, then the students’ module choices can be used as the basis for generating pathways.

For more information about creating pathways from student choice, see Create pathways from student choice.

  5. To save the new pathways, click OK in the Pathway Generator window, then click OK in the Programme Editor window.
