Use the planning formulae

You can use the planning formulae to adjust the total size or reserved size of a programmes of study, pathway, or module.

For example, you might use the planning formulae in the following situations:

  • To increase the number of available spaces on a programme, you might increase its total size. You might need to do this if the programme is more popular than expected and it has a negative number of available spaces. The negative number indicates how much additional space is required.
  • If the academic year has started, you might reduce the number of reserved spaces on a module. This action increases the number of available spaces on the module.

To use the planning formulae, follow these steps:

  1. Open a list of programmes of study, pathways, or modules. For example, if you want to resolve a discrepancy that is indicated on the Enterprise Course Planner dashboard, click Show beside the coloured bar and number that indicate it.
  2. In the list, select the items that you want to modify. To select multiple items, press and hold Ctrl, then click the items. The action that you select later in this procedure will be applied to all selected items.
  3. In the toolbar at the top of the window that contains the list, click Planning Formulae.
  4. In the Planning Formulae window, click the button that corresponds to the action that you want to take (for example, see 1 below).

    Figure 37: Select an action

You can choose one of the following options:

    Option

    Description

    Auto adjust reserved spaces

Sets the number of reserved spaces on the item to a specified, acceptable proportion.

The action calculates what the specified percentage of the item's total size is, then rounds the outcome up to the next whole number. The item's reserved size is set to the result of this calculation. The current number of reserved spaces does not affect this action.

    Make all reserved space available

Reduces the number of reserved spaces on the item to zero.

You might use this action after all expected students have arrived, and you want to make reserved spaces available for students who arrive late.

Make a number of reserved spaces available

Reduces the number of reserved spaces on the item by the specified number. If the specified number exceeds number of reserved spaces, the number of reserved spaces becomes zero.

You might use this action if you want to make only some of the item's reserved spaces available.

Make a percentage of reserved spaces available

Reduces the number of reserved spaces on the item by the specified proportion (expressed as a percentage).

The action calculates what the specified percentage of the item's reserved size is, then rounds the outcome up to the next whole number. The item's reserved size is reduced by the result of this calculation.

Increase size by a number of spaces

Increases the item's total size by the specified number.

You can use this method to increase the available space on the item without affecting the number of reserved spaces.

    Increase size by a percentage

Increases the item's total size by the specified proportion (expressed as a percentage).

The action calculates what the specified percentage of the item's total size is, then rounds the outcome up to the next whole number. The item's total size is increased by the result of this calculation.

You might use this action if your course planning is based on student numbers from a previous year, but an overall increase in student numbers is expected. You can increase the size of planning items by a corresponding percentage.

  5. Set up the action by entering a number, if required.
  6. Click OK. Enterprise Course Planner modifies the items.
